First i'm going to write about what actually happened at the battle. At the battle, the Saxon's had the higher ground and had made an impenetrable shield wall as long as they stayed in formation. The Normans tried and tried but were unable to break through the wall. It looked like Harold had won, until a section of Normans started running down the hill. Some of the Saxons had seen this charged after them, thinking they were retreating but they were wrong. At the bottom of the hill the Normans turned around and killed all the Saxons following them.. When the Saxons charged forward they left part of the shield wall vulnerable for the Normans to charge through. The Normans started slowly picking off the rest of the Saxons. King Harold's luck was really out now as William told his archers to fire their arrows a little higher. Saxons are being hit from the arrows and ,according to the Bayeux tapestry, one of the the arrows hit King Harold in the eye. The Normans had won and they finally finished the Saxons off. Here is a video showing what happened. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOwW04V4NA4&feature=related
Why Harold Was a Bad Leader
Harold was a bad leader for many reasons. First of all, Harold had just made his men march all the way up to York, fight a battle and then come back down to London. Secondly, Harold had let his men drink and dance so they were tired in the morning. Lastly, Harold hadn't bothered to get good equipment for his soldiers to fight with. These are only a few of the reasons why Harold Godwinson was a bad leader.
Why William was a Good Leader
William was a good leader for many other reasons. For example, unlike Harold, William and his troops had spent the night praying. Also William had full time, expierenced troops in his army. Next William was a clever man and surprised Harold when he attacked. Lastly William was a very lucky man with some of his achievements iduring the battle. These are my reasons why I think that William was a good leader.
Why Harold Was Unlucky
Harold Godwinson was unlucky in several ways during the battle. Firstly, Harold's best troops had been either injured or killed in the battle against the vikings. Also, if the winds hadn't turned William would nver had been able to sail over to England. Lastly Harold had been surprised when William attacked and took a while to get set up. As you can see a war isn't always won on skill, but sometimes on luck.
